Last year the US spent a whopping 10 billion dollars on cosmetics and over 28 billion dollars on prescription drugs. Those large numbers speak volumes about what American’s think is important. Health and our beauty are on the top of our priority lists, yet the two subjects are rarely talked about together.
Tips for Beauty and Health
- Take vitamins and minerals. - Without the essential vitamin supplements, your body can’t thrive and won’t thrive. Minerals help provide the building blocks for our cells. The daily amounts needed to stay younger, far exceed the amounts recommended by the FDA. If you want to lose 10 years off your age, you need to get the most out of the vitamins you take. Get the right combination of vitamins your body needs to combat aging and improve your health! If you take a multivitamin, know this. Lead has been found in many of them in the US. A better way to take vitamin supplements is to take them separately. If you prefer multivitamins, be sure to get ones that advertise active enzymes. This means that the nutrients in them have been extracted from real foods. Without active sources, vitamins will do you no good.
- Consume leafy green and/or brightly colored vegetables, fresh fruits, lean cuts of meat (and lower amounts of meat), preservative free foods, fiber rich foods, nuts, berries, and fish. Eat less junk food, bread, dairy, and sugary snacks. Weigh out the good and the bad when you think about food. Its OK to pick out less healthy foods occasionally. Just make it the exception, not the rule.
To reap both the benefits of beauty and health, eat five small well balanced meals a day to burn calories. Regardless of what you’ve heard before, you should eat a light breakfast, (like a meal replacement shake, smoothie, or piece of fruit), eat a bigger lunch, (lunch time is when you burn the most calories), and a small dinner. Overindulgence is not normal. If you overeat, try and figure out how and you can stop the vicious cycle and why you can’t seem to.
- Water hydrates your body, cleans environmental toxins out of cells, carries away waste products, and keep your skin soft and supple. Be sure to get 10 glasses of pure fresh water a day.
- The fat found in avocados, nuts, and some oils, are actually good fats. They are also good sources of phyto-nutrients and essential fatty acids. These fats help protect against heart disease and Cancer and also help dispel some forms of depression.
- Exercise, no matter how much or how little, can help elevate your mood by releasing endorphins in your body. These are the feel good chemicals that are released when we feel elated or happy. Ten minutes of exercise, five times a week is a good start. You can squeeze in 10 minutes a day somewhere. Strength training is extremely important as we age and a great way to kick start weight loss. Make exercise a top priority and it will happen.
- Taking deep breaths of air will help relax you and send lots of oxygen to your cells. Your body needs lots of good fresh oxygen to function properly. The deeper you breathe, the more your skin, hair, and nails will show it.
- Find time to relax every day. You can read a book, walk the dog, watch a favorite show, or just sit out on the front porch and listen to the birds sing. Whatever your forte and wherever you live, if you can find time to relax a bit each day, you will look refreshed and your skin will glow!
- Too much of anything is not good for you. This includes caffeine, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, and the sun. Each one of these items can have detrimental effects on beauty and health. They can make you age very quickly. If you have to consume some of these items, be sure to consume them less frequently and live a healthy lifestyle more frequently. The ill side effects of all of them are far reaching.
